While this did tighten the skin, it often resulted in an unnatural and noticeable tautness. Today, facelift procedures are designed to reposition sagging and deflated tissues to their original places and, if needed, fill hollowed areas, thus achieving a significantly more natural look.

Current advancements in aesthetics utilize temporary muscle relaxants like Botox or injectable fillers such as Restylane (Restylane Juvederm) to temporarily address fine wrinkles. However, these methods do not eliminate the sagging that occurs in the deeper areas of the face. Facial sagging can only be corrected through facelift surgery. Sagging is most prominent in the eyelids, from the cheekbones towards the cheeks, downwards at the corners of the mouth, from the cheeks towards the chin, and in the central part of the neck.

The face should be divided into two sections: the eyes and forehead as one part, and the area below the eyes and the neck as the second part. If only one of these two areas is corrected, the laxity in the other area will become more noticeable. Although individual circumstances may vary, it is generally a more appropriate approach to operate on both areas together in the same session.

Patients frequently ask about the longevity of facelift surgery results. Several factors influence the permanence of a facelift:

Genetic characteristics of the patient’s skin: Some individuals’ skin is genetically prone to sagging and wrinkling, while others may not experience skin sagging for many years. Genetic makeup plays a significant role in this.

Smoking: Unfortunately, it is unrealistic to expect healthy and good-looking skin in smokers. Skin vessels are among the areas most affected by smoking, and cigarette smoke damages the skin, quickly diminishing the positive effects of surgery.

Stress: Stress and sorrow can lead to facial hollowing. Factors such as fatigue and depression can cause the positive effects of surgery to be short-lived.

Excessive sun exposure: Overexposure of the skin to ultraviolet rays in the sun or tanning salons, and the effort to achieve a tan, causes the skin to age faster than its chronological age. For the same reason, excessive sun exposure should be avoided after facelift surgeries. Some patients misunderstand this and believe they should avoid the sun entirely. However, this is not correct; controlled sun exposure does not harm the skin, but sunscreen must be used during peak sun hours in summer. It is also important to remember that skin dehydration and lack of moisture can rapidly wear down the skin.

Considering all these factors, the positive effects of facelift surgery can last for many years.

In the past, facelift surgeries primarily aimed to stretch the skin.
