Contact of a freshly healed wound with the sun without protection, and delaying wound healing by continuously scratching the bite area, can lead to spots, some scars, and even moles. Sensitive skin in bite areas can also become stained by contact with cosmetic products such as perfume, deodorant, baby oil, cologne, etc. Dr. Ömür Tekeli emphasized that the bite area should be disinfected and itching reduced using antihistamines to prevent future skin problems, and highlighted the importance of consulting a dermatologist for excessive itching, swelling, and multiple bites. Furthermore, individuals who frequently spend time outdoors in environments where such insects live, and those who react excessively to bites, may benefit from allergy testing for other potential allergens. Care should be taken not to inhale agricultural pesticides used for flies, as these substances can trigger various respiratory diseases. Burning coffee is also not recommended due to its carcinogenic effects. “Camphor,” an active ingredient available in pharmacies that creates an aura by evaporating to repel parasites and flies, and high-quality insect repellent lotions are among the safely usable pest repellents. www.m-onep.com: Tel: (0212) 352 32 33

INSECT SPECIES THAT BITE HUMANS

Common insects that bite humans include mosquitoes, sandflies, midges, horseflies, fleas, and bed bugs. Some arthropods not classified as insects, such as ticks, spiders, and scabies mites, also bite and can harm humans. In tropical regions, mosquito bites can cause malaria. Stinging animals include bees, wasps, and hornets. Less commonly considered but frequently occurring bite types are those from insects living on animals such as birds, chickens, mice, etc. (like pigeon mites), which are often unnoticed due to their small size. These insects come in groups and cause numerous bites. Since these insects move passively with the wind, bites can also be observed in individuals in distant places who have no contact with animals. These bites are 3-5 mm in diameter and itchy. Similar, but much more severely itchy symptoms, starting suddenly and alarming patients, are seen in animal scabies. This occurs when scabies from animals like cats, dogs, horses, and sheep is transmitted to humans; however, since these mites do not remain permanently in humans, the disease resolves on its own within a week.

Dr. Ömür Tekeli, Dermatology Specialist at M-Onep Etiler Clinic, warned that many insect bites, which might heal on their own within a week, can turn into skin spots and scars due to persistent scratching.
