Biography Prof.Dr. Onur Erol
Born in 1939, in Söke, Prof. Dr. Onur Erol completed his high school education at St. Joseph French High School in Istanbul. In 1965, he graduated from Istanbul University, Faculty of Medicine and went on to finish his training in General Surgery at Hacettepe University. Upon completion of this program, he became a Board Certified General Surgeon in 1969. Immediately following, he continued his training in the speciality of plastic surgery and received his Board Certification in this field in 1971. In 1974, he received the title of Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery at Hacettepe University. The thesis for his associate professorship received an Honor Award in the Junior Classification of the ASPRS International Essay Contest in 1975. This experimental and clinical investigation was a new, innovative concept in the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
In 1976, Dr. Erol received a scholarship award from The Scientific and Technical Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK). Since that time, he worked for three and a half years consecutively at the Eastern Virginia School of Medicine (1976), Miami University School of Medicine (1977), and in Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas (1977-1980), where he received the title of Associate Professor.
Dr. Erol completed 21 different research projects while in the United States. For many of these studies, he received the following: an American Cancer Society GRANT Award, two NIH awards, and First Place in the Senior Classification Essay Contest of ASPRS.
In 1980, he returned to Turkey, and in the same year received the title of Professor of Plastic Surgery at Hacettepe University Medical School. The following year, he won the Health Sciences Award of the Sedat Simavi Foundation.
In 1989, Dr. Erol left his professorship and moved to Istanbul with his wife and two children and continued his academic work as a Visiting Professor at Akdeniz University Plastic Surgery Department and Marmara University Dental School. Meanwhile, he began to build his private practice which he now works in today at his clinic, ONEP, in Istanbul. In June 1999, he was also appointed as the Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Kadır Has University in Istanbul.
Dr. Erol is very active in many associations and organizations, both in Turkey and Internationally. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the European Plastic Surgery Association. Despite his busy private practice he travels and presents at least three to four original scientific presentations per year to various countries for congresses and symposiums to represent his work and Turkey in such countries as the US, Brazil, France, Italy and Australia among many others. Additionally, his credentials include the development of 18 new techniques related to plastic surgery. He also has over 70 medical publications and over 200 scientific citations as well as over 235 scientific presentations that were given at various plastic surgery congresses throughout the world.
In addition to his scientific contributions, he also contributes to the education of plastic surgeons. Dr. Erol has educated 21 young plastic surgeons following their residencies. He does this in order to create more qualified plastic surgeons as well as develop the scientists among those surgeons.

CONTRIBUTIONS IN PLASTIC SURGERY
1. A new method for bi-lateral cleft lip based on the Millard Technique. Dr. Erol has been performing this procedure since 1973.
2. The Secondary Island Prefabricated Flap was developed and used in face and nose reconstruction. It is in international literature and a concept in plastic surgery.
3. The reconstruction of burned breast deformity via areola transposition. This is published in the United Kingdom and in other international literature and was presented at many international congresses.
4. A new mastopexy technique was developed that leaves no noticeable scar. This technique known as Circumaleor Mastopexy. Dr. Erol has been using it for 25 years and it has been filmed and shown in many meetings. He has been invited to many international congresses to speak about this procedure.
5. Florescent paint photography technique. This is published in the USA and is used at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and in Hacettepe University in Turkey for both clinical and examination purposes. It is also published in international literature.
