The curves of the upper lip are called the Cupid’s Bow, and the shape of this bow has been the subject of various studies by many aesthetic and sexologists. In an aesthetically pleasing face, there is always a certain harmony between the upper and lower lips, and between the lips and facial contours. Lips play a major role in a person’s beauty by ensuring the harmonious integrity of the teeth, jaw structure, and all facial contours. The width, thickness, thinness, and position of the lips have an important place in the formation of beauty.

Lip Aesthetics with Fillers
- Filling Procedure with Autologous Tissues (Tissue Graft)
- Dermal Strips: This procedure involves removing strips of tissue called Dermis from the lower part of the skin from different areas of the body and placing these dermal strips inside the lip. The tissue, mostly placed at the edges of the lip, increases the lip’s curves, thereby creating a more attractive appearance. After the swelling subsides post-operation, more natural and attractive lips emerge. Unlike when foreign substances are injected, an artificial and repulsive appearance does not occur.
- Fat Tissues: This procedure involves providing contour and thickness by injecting concentrated fat tissues along with fat cells into the lip using a needle. The biggest advantage of this method is that it requires no incisions. In this technique, where the patient’s own tissue is used, 2-3 repeat sessions at 3-month intervals will be beneficial for a long-term effect.
- Tissue Cocktail: This procedure involves creating contour by injecting a tissue cocktail into the lip area with the help of needles. The tissue cocktail is obtained by removing the Dermis and membranes from the lower part of the skin using special techniques and finely mincing this mixture. This mixture, which is very rich in collagen, is injected with a needle into the necessary areas of the lip. It provides more effective results than applications made with dermal strips.
Foreign Fillers (Heterotransplants)
- Hyaluronic Acid: This is a substance found in the body, with few reported complications to date, and appears to be the most usable among foreign substances. Hyaluronic Acid, which has an effect lasting between 3 and 6 months, is the most preferred foreign injectable material. It is the first choice for most physicians after tissue, due to its FDA approval, its non-damaging effect on tissues, and its ability to maintain a natural appearance.
- Collagen: This foreign filler, produced from cattle and known as Collagen in the market, is not preferred because it can cause immune system reactions and be rejected by the body. Although its effect on the body is low, allergic reactions and, more recently, the risk of Mad Cow Disease are also mentioned.
- Silicone: Although silicone can thicken the lip, it can seep into tissues and disrupt normal anatomy, leading to deformation of subcutaneous tissues. Due to its dangers, it is a banned practice in the USA, and treating its incorrect application is quite difficult. Lips that become rubbery can make women unhappy, and trying to kiss with such rubbery lips feels like touching a stone. Most patients complain of loss of sensation in their lips, and there is also a risk of allergic reactions.
- Other Fillers: There are over 150 different fillers that can be injected into the lips or other parts of the body. Many people suffer and become unhappy due to these substances, which are presented to people as if they promise miracles. Complications caused by such foreign substances are demonstrated with examples in plastic surgery meetings. In cases where the damage is not obvious, it is unknown how the tissues and body are harmed.
Aesthetic Procedures Performed with Incisions on the Lip
Incisions Made from Inside the Lip
With incisions made inside the lip, the mucosa and lip covering are separated, thereby shortening the inner length of the lip. In this application, where the lip is turned outwards, the muscles are also intervened for tightening, and an increase in thickness is achieved. This application also helps to shorten wide lips. Since the incision is made in the inner part of the lip, i.e., inside the mouth, there is no visible scar.
Interventions Made from Outside the Lip
In this intervention, where the lip contour is increased by an incision made outside the thin prominence called the white line in lip anatomy, i.e., exactly at the lip edge, the red part of the lip is turned outwards. During the intervention, some changes are also made to the shape of the lip. A more curved lip can be created with interventions on the Cupid’s Bow line. Thanks to incisions hidden at the edge of the lip, there is mostly no scar, but all patients are still warned that a scar may remain in the incision area since an external incision will be applied. If a scar forms here, patients may indeed be unhappy. For this reason, the patient must be informed about this from the beginning and decide by taking this risk into account. Nevertheless, if there is a scar on the incision line, it is possible for women to conceal the scar using cosmetic products.
The biggest advantage of this method is that it allows for easier determination of the lip shape. Interventions to narrow the lip by intervening with the muscles can also be performed. The lip can be shortened by suspending it from the inside to the base of the nose. In cases where the lip-nose distance is long, such lip shortening procedures can be applied.
Lip Thinning
Lip thinning, performed on patients with very thick lips, is a procedure carried out by removing elliptical mucosa from inside the lip. If there are foreign substances in the lip, these substances must first be cleaned so that the lip can gain a more natural appearance.
Narrowing of Lip Width
Generally, it can be said that this is the most difficult part of lip surgeries. In patients with congenitally open mouth corners, the open area can be closed, and the lip can be restored to its normal shape. The surgical technique used in patients with such congenital lip deformities can also be used in aesthetic surgery for individuals with wide mouths. With narrowing and sutures made from the side, it is possible to narrow the lips by 3-7 millimeters from each side, totaling 1-1.5 centimeters. However, since this surgical application will result in more scarring, the patient must make the decision for surgery by considering this situation. For healthy healing, it is recommended that the patient restrict lip movements for approximately 3 weeks.
Correction of Lip Wrinkles
Can be performed by combining different methods:

- Reduction of wrinkles with the use of fillers
- Reduction of wrinkles by combined application of filler and laser treatment
Lip wrinkles, which appear as a result of the melting of tissues under the lip skin, can deepen into grooves due to traumas caused by constantly repeated facial expressions. Much better results are obtained by replacing the melted tissues and applying laser peeling to the surface.
