Gynecomastia, the abnormal enlargement of the male breast due to hereditary factors or hormonal imbalances, deeply affects male psychology as it creates a feminine appearance. Gynecomastia, which accounts for approximately 65% of male breast disorders, is typically caused by hormonal imbalances observed during adolescence.
It is rarely caused by hormone-producing tumors, excessive alcohol, or drug use. During adolescence, breast tissue enlargement usually does not become noticeable, and this condition typically normalizes within a few years after puberty. However, in some cases, this development continues, and the breast remains much larger than it should be; this enlargement can occur in both breasts or in only one.
Gynecomastia is observed in three different types:
- Breast enlargement due to fat tissue growth: Adipose-type gynecomastia
- Breast enlargement due to increased glandular tissue: Glandular-type gynecomastia
- Breast enlargement with increased fat and glandular tissue: Mixed-type gynecomastia
Adolescents often perceive the abnormal enlargement of their breasts as a characteristic belonging entirely to the opposite sex, viewing it as an embarrassing event that can profoundly affect their psychology. For this reason, young people often choose the easiest solution: to hide and isolate themselves from society. However, with advancing technology and aesthetic surgical solutions, gynecomastia treatment has achieved a very high success rate.
In the Treatment of Gynecomastia
Two different approaches are applied “according to the problem”: either the removal of excess fat tissue in the breast with liposuction applications or the surgical removal of excess tissue. If the problem stems from fat tissue, only liposuction applications are sufficient. However, if the glandular structure is firm, the glandular tissue can also be removed by entering through the liposuction area. For glandular structures that are harder than normal, ultrasonic liposuction has recently been adopted, allowing for more positive results than conventional liposuction applications.
Depending on the size of the breast(s), the cause of the problem, and the patient’s health status, gynecomastia treatment can be performed under general or local anesthesia. This procedure takes between 30 and 90 minutes, and the patient does not need to stay in the hospital after the operation. Shortly after the completion of the operation, the person can go home and return to work within 2-3 days. An elastic bandage is applied for approximately 3 weeks after surgery to maintain the new shape of the breast.
Today, there are three different types of treatment options for gynecomastia: surgical, ultrasonic liposuction, and conventional liposuction. These techniques are sometimes applied alone and sometimes in combination, thereby yielding results that promise high satisfaction.
