Patients who undergo nasal surgery often attribute their reasons to causes such as “I had tissue removed from my nose,” “there was a bone protrusion in my nose,” “I couldn’t breathe through my nose,” or “I had a deviation.”
The condition medically referred to as “septal deviation” can be explained as follows: As is well known, the nose has two nostrils and two separate airway passages extending like tubes towards the nasopharynx. A partition exists in the middle that separates these two tunnels. This partition is called the nasal septum, or septum for short. The anterior-superior part of this septum is cartilage, while the posterior-inferior part is bone. Normally, the septum is expected to be in the middle, with both airway tunnels being of equal width. However, due to various reasons, this septum may not be perfectly straight, containing curves or shifting to one side — a condition referred to as deviation, meaning curvature. Whichever side the septum leans towards, that side narrows, making it difficult to breathe through that passage.
Deviation can be significant in terms of aesthetic surgery. If this curvature is located in the upper and front parts of the nose as seen from the front, the nose is also visibly crooked, causing both breathing difficulties and an unaesthetic appearance. Correcting such visible curvatures requires both opening the airway and correcting the shape of the nose, which also involves performing a cosmetic procedure.
When correcting curvature removal and disposal of the deviated cartilage and bones are generally performed. After the remaining bones are cut and realigned, the nose is placed in a cast in its corrected shape. However, during the healing period, if the fractured bones do not heal properly, the improvement in appearance may not be as satisfactory as desired.
