AKŞAM GAZETESİ – FEBRUARY 2, 2014 Under-eye dark circles are one of the cosmetic concerns that cause unhappiness in people’s daily lives. This problem can be minimized with a thorough examination and subsequent correct treatment steps. However, the examination phase is often overlooked. It is difficult to combat under-eye dark circles with cosmetic products chosen based on friends’ advice, herbal ingredients purchased from herbalists, or products found at home. This is because this issue is among the most stubborn skin problems. If the patient has severe under-eye bags or sagging causing the dark circles, the patient should first be directed to surgical intervention. If depressions under the eyes are causing the dark circles, these depressions are elevated with fat tissue injection, which is a new surgical procedure.
If the examination reveals no loss of connective tissue, but only discoloration, then chemical peeling applications specifically for the eye area, which can lighten the color of this region, may be performed. The combination with Q-switch Nd-YAG laser, applied concurrently, increases treatment success.
Relief with PRP application
If there is significant connective tissue loss causing the dark circles, in addition to the treatment options mentioned above, the connective tissue in this area can be strengthened with radiofrequency wave therapy specifically for the eye area. Furthermore, hyaluronic acid suitable for the eye area or autologous fat injection using the patient’s own fat can be considered among the treatment options. In both cases, PRP application to the entire face, along with the eye area, as a supportive treatment, provides significant revitalization to both the face and under-eye area, which can further increase patient satisfaction.
Although they may not provide as much of a solution as fillers or lasers for under-eye dark circles, cream-based products with brightening properties can also be used to alleviate the problem and make the patient feel better. Vitamin K is the first ingredient we should look for in these products. Additionally, another active ingredient is Vitamin C, which has properties that increase collagen production in connective tissue, reduce moisture loss in the under-eye area by increasing water retention under the skin, and can regress pigmentations on the skin. Retinoic acid is an active ingredient that is effective on both pigmentation and connective tissue, and in doing so, can increase cell turnover in the skin.
Regardless of the cause, recommending creams with brightening properties, along with all treatments; and creams and serums containing vitamins E, K, C, and some growth and tissue factors, increases treatment success.
